German iron ore imports rose 11.4% during Jan-May '14, says data

BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster): According to the latest statistics released by German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the country’s iron ore imports surged higher by 11.4% during the initial five-month period of the current year. This is in comparison with the imports during the corresponding period last year. The country’s iron ore imports during the period from January to May this year totaled nearly 17.64 million tons.

The largest iron ore exporter to Germany during the five-month period was the Netherlands. Germany’s iron ore imports from the country totaled 8.873 million tons, accounting for more than 50% of the total imports by Germany during the period. The second largest exporter to Germany was Brazil with 3.06 million tons. In third place was Sweden with exports to Germany totaling 2.86 million tons during the period. The import price from the Netherlands, Brazil and Sweden averaged at US$129.3/ton, US$135.5/ton and US$128.2/ton respectively.

The import prices of iron ore averaged at $126.20 per ton during 2013. The average import prices have increased marginally by 1.9% when compared with the previous year.

The iron ore imports by Germany during the month of May ’14 alone totaled 3.06 million tons, 21.8% higher year-on-year.
