GACR Industry Challenge recycles over 217,000 pounds of aluminum cans

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): The Great American Can Roundup (GACR) Industry Challenge sponsored by Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) collected and recycled 217,350 pounds of beverage cans. The event raised more than $179,400 for local charities across the United States.

The largest collection was reported by Rexam's Beverage Can North America (BCNA) Corporate Office in Chicago. The office collected more than 78,000 pounds of aluminum can and raised $45,300 for various local charities. As the winner of the challenge, the office was awarded additional $2,000 to be donated as charity.

The Whitehouse, OH, Rexam facility arrived second with a total collection of 14,600 pounds of aluminum cans. The facility raised $10,000 towards charity. In addition it received additional $1,000 to be donated to charity of its own choice.

In third place was Ball Corporation's Findlay, OH facility with total collection of 35,323 pounds of aluminum cans. The facility raised more than $24,700 for charity.

The GACR Industry Challenge sponsored by CMI is being held every year to promote awareness around the environmental benefits of recycling aluminum cans. This year, the nine month competition involved 51 facilities, including plants and corporate offices. The main participants of the challenge included U.S. can manufacturers Rexam BCNA, Crown Holdings, Inc. and Ball Corporation, as well as the major aluminum manufacturers- Novelis and Alcoa.
