AUSTIN (Scrap Monster): Fire broke out at Oak Cliff Metals early morning Tuesday around 1.00 AM. Fire crews were called to the scrap metal recycling center in the 500 Block of Brown Industrial Road. Dark smokes were visible from Interstate 35.
Firefighters located a burning pile of scrap metal and quickly extinguished the fire. The fire was contained to just one pile and was not allowed to spread. Initially, they faced trouble in getting adequate water to put out the fire. According to sources, multiple departments were called and the firefighters could manage to get the fire under control very quickly. By 7 AM, all flames were extinguished.
One firefighter who was injured during the operation was hospitalized.
This is not the first fire incident at Oak Cliff Metals. A much larger fire had occurred at the site almost a year before. Since then, the company had been constantly working towards reducing the size of piles so that fire, if any, could be contained more easily.
Officials from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) who monitored the site stated that there was no issue with regards to air quality.
Oak Cliff Metals collects and processes ferrous and non-ferrous materials and has a history of over 25 years of operation in Northern Texas area.
