HOUSTON (Scrap Monster): One person was injured as firefighters battled a stubborn fire late Thursday in a huge pile of junk cars at a scrap metal recycling plant in southwest Houston.
The blaze broke out about 10:40 p.m. at 9400 Rhonda near Consuela, said Deputy Chief Herman Gonzales of the Houston Fire Department. Firefighters gained control of the flames about two hours later.
Gonzales said a worker at the business was burned on his nose and back. He was rushed to Memorial Hermann hospital. His condition was not released.
The blaze broke out, Gonzales said, as the worker was draining fuel from fuel tanks. The flames grew quickly and the worker called 911. After they arrived, firefighters soon called for more equipment and personnel.
The fire spread through the scraped cars piled in a stack up to about 15 feet high. Cranes were used to move the smashed, battered vehicles to allow firefighters to pour water and foam onto the blaze.
"Because the cars were stacked up so high it was hard to get to," Gonzales said.
A shed also burned.
Investigators are trying to determine what sparked the fire.
