Extraordinary Silver Coin found in Roll of Kennedy Half Dollars

LOUISIANA (Scrap Monster): Rare 1861-O Seated Liberty half-dollar has been found out in a roll of Kennedy half dollar. The luckiest person who made the discovery of a lifetime was from New Orleans.

The unnamed coin collector found out the special half dollar while he was sorting the roll of Kennedy half dollars. He was searching for silver half dollars which were minted before 1964, as it costs well above 50 cents. The special silver coin is not only valuable for its age, silver content and rarity, but also for its history.

The man said that he never had such a luckiest coin finding before. Coin experts say that the special silver coin was minted in New Orleans at the time of the Civil War. They determined that this coin was minted while the mint was under Confederate control, by the unique die break present on its obverse side.

The coin collector is not planning to sell coin in the near future, but if he plans to it will be for more than 50 cents. The price of the silver coin is not known as it hasn’t been graded yet. But for the similar coins, which had been certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corp, value was about $3,500 in the year 2012.

The coin collector has also found out 1869-O Barber half-dollar from his last rolls JFK half dollars, but it was far more damaged. As it is not as rare as 1861-O Seated Liberty half-dollar, it is less valuable, but not less than price of a roll of half dollars.
