Europe's PET recycling rate surges 5% in 2015

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The figures released by Petcore Europe indicate that PET collection and recycling volumes in Europe were up by 5% in 2015, an increase of 2% when matched with the collection and recycling rate during 2014. As per data, nearly 59% of all bottles placed in the European marketplace are being collected for recycling. The average operating rate too increased in 2015, when compared with the previous year. The above data was revealed in the recently published annual PCI Wood Mackenzie report on post-consumer PET collection and recycling in Europe. Along with highlighting the successful PET recycling rate achieved by the region during the year, the report also warns about the serious challenges faced by the PET industry.

The report titled “PET Recycling in Europe 2015” provides detailed country wise collection figures in 2015 and projections to 2020. It analyzes the reclamation capacity in the region and provides necessary information on the various end uses of processed flake. In addition, the report also provides a thorough market overview of the region and a detailed analysis of pricing trends during 2015.

Roberto Bertaggia, Petcore Europe President expressed great pleasure in the continuous growth of the European PET collection and recycling rates. PET recycling plays a crucial role in ensuring circular economy and contributes significantly to achieving the set plastics recycling goals.

According to the report, much work needs to be done by the industry to make it prepared to face the future challenges. The report demonstrates the need of increased consumer awareness and recycling involvement towards continuous improvement of PET collection and recycling rate over the forthcoming years. The report recommends the need for an improved collection and sorting mechanism to boost rates in future. Incidentally, clear bottles accounted for just around 15% of the stream in 2015. The share of clear bales in the entire stream has continued to decline during the year. The drop pin rate of clear bales prompts the need for increased spending on sorting technologies. This in turn may result in significant rise in costs for the PET industry, the report states.

Meantime, the report released jointly by NAPCOR and APR suggests that US PET recycling rates have dropped marginally from 31% in 2014 to 30.1% in 2015. In 2015, approximately 5,971 million pounds of PET bottles were sold into the marketplace in the US. Out of this, the weight of post consumer collected for recycling in the US and sold to recycling markets amounted to 1,797 million pounds during the year. The drop in collection volumes was mainly on account of decline in curbside PET collection.
