EU-28 nations' ferrous scrap exports rose sharply during Jan-Sep '16

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): According to EU trade statistics, the ferrous scrap exports by the EU-28 nations increased modestly in September this year, upon comparison with the previous month. The exports were up significantly over the same month a year before. Also, cumulative scrap exports by the country during the initial nine-month period of the year were up considerably when matched with the corresponding period in 2015.

The EU-28 countries exported 1.393 million tons of scrap steel during the month of September this year. The exports were up marginally by 0.3% when matched with the previous month. The country had exported 1.389 million tons of scrap steel during August 2016. The exports have registered month-on-month rise for the third consecutive month in a row.

The biggest importer of ferrous scrap from EU-28 countries during September this year was Turkey. The imports by Turkey totaled 806,218 tons, accounting for nearly 58% of the total scrap exports by EU-28 countries during the month. The Turkish imports from EU-28 countries witnessed marginal rise of 2.6% from August ’16. The country’s ferrous scrap imports had totaled 785,746 tons in August this year. Egypt was the second largest importer during the month, with 112,062 tons. The ferrous scrap exports to Egypt from EU_28 nations declined sharply by over 18% over the previous month. In third place was India with 110,732 tons. The other key importers of ferrous scrap from EU-28 region during the month were Pakistan (81,828 tons), Switzerland (47,673 tons) and the USA (40,614 tons).

The EU-28 countries exported 12.672 million tons of scrap steel during the initial nine-month period of the year. The exports were up considerably by 23.7% when compared with the net export volume of 10.243 million tons during the period from January to September in 2015. The monthly exports averaged at 1.138 million tons during the nine-month period. At the current rate, the country’s scrap steel exports are estimated to total around 17 million tons during the entire year 2016.

The largest importer of ferrous scrap from EU-28 countries during the initial nine-month period of the year was Turkey. The imports by Turkey totaled 7.321 million tons, accounting for nearly 58% share of the total exports by the region during the period. The imports by Turkey increased significantly by 23.8% from the previous year. Turkey had imported 5.912 million tons during Jan-Sep in 2015. India was the second largest export destination during the first nine months of the current year. India’s ferrous scrap imports from EU-28 countries totaled 1.237 million tons, accounting for 9.8% share of EU 28’s total ferrous scrap exports during the period. The exports to India jumped higher considerably by nearly 25% year-on-year. In third place was Pakistan with 6.3% share of total EU-28 scrap exports. The exports to Pakistan increased significantly by 58.4% to 1.016 million tons when matched with the exports of 641,196 tons in Jan-Sep ’15. The other key importers of ferrous scrap from EU-28 countries during the nine-month period were the USA (794,460 tons), Egypt (639,505 tons), Bangladesh (422,339 tons) and Switzerland (350,106 tons).
