ERI’s inventive e-cycleNYC program named “Top Project of the Year”

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): ERI-the nation’s largest recycler of electronic waste has been named the winner of the “Top Project of the Year” honor at the annual Environmental Leader Product & Project Awards. e-cycleNYC- an electronics recycling initiative by the ERI in collaboration with the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) won the prestigious award.

According to sources, Environmental Leader’s expert panel of judges provided exemplary rating to the ecycleNYC recycling initiative. According to them, the program has demonstrated clear benefits to the residents of the city as well as the city’s environment. They appreciated the working model of the program by which the entire recycling process is funded by electronics manufacturers, at zero cost to residents. Furthermore, they noted that the project offers opportunity to be scaled, especially to metro locations.

Tim Hermes, publisher of Environmental Leader parent company, Business Sector Media stated that all the entries to the award demonstrated high level of quality and innovation. The entrants were judged by a highly respected and critical panel of eminent judges, following strict set of judging criteria. ERI, who emerged as the winner, has set extremely high industry standards, Hermes noted. Meantime, John Shegerian, Chairman and CEO of ERI stated that ERI is humbled to have been singled out for the award by such an esteemed panel of judges.

Incidentally, the panel headed by Peter Bussey of LNS Research also comprised of judges from Advanced Micro Devices, ATT, Best Buy, C&A, Caesars, Cox Enterprises, Fetzer Vineyards, General Motors, Harbec, Kellogg, LNS Research, Marriott, MillerCoors, Newell Brands, Novartis, Oldcastle Inc., Panasonic, Parker Hannifin, Paul Leavoy/Consultant, Safeway, Sears Holdings Corporation, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company, Strategic Sustainable Consulting, Tyco Global Products, Wellborn Cabinet, and Zee Company/Member of the Vincit Group.

Started in 2013, e-cycleNYC program collects unwanted electronics from apartment buildings with more than 10 units. The collected electronics are recycled by ERI in compliance with highest industry standards. The program accepts wide range of electronic devices such as televisions, VCRs, DVRs, DVD players, cable and satellite boxes, video game consoles, computers, small servers, monitors, laptops and peripherals, printers, scanners, fax machines, small electronics including tablets, mobile phones and MP3 players. The public-private partnership between the Department and ERI is fully funded by electronics manufacturers and is offered free-of-cost to residents and participating buildings.

DSNY had recently announced that e-cycleNYC electronics recycling program reached an important milestone by collecting 10 million pounds of used electronics. Also, the access of the program had crossed 2.3 million residents, it noted.

The Environmental Leader Product & Project Awards are given away in recognition of excellence in products and services that provide companies with energy and environmental benefits, or in corporate projects that improved environmental, sustainability or energy management and increased the bottom line. This is the fifth year of the award.
