Ericsson partners with MTN to launch e-waste recycling in West Africa

KAMPALA (Scrap Monster): Ericsson-the multinational communication technology and service provider has partnered with MTN Ivory Coast to offer e-waste awareness and collection campaign in the West African nation. The partnership is the first of its kind in the country. The partnership will launch its operations on October 7th.

According to studies conducted by UN agency, global e-waste is projected to reach 65.4 million tonnes by 2017, growing almost by one-third when compared with 2012 levels. The report also states that West African countries will be among the most hardly hit regions, not only on account of the rising e-waste generated locally, but also on account of dumping of global e-waste, especially from developed countries.

The campaign aims to create awareness among the country’s population on the consequences of unsafe disposal of decommissioned electronic devices. Moreover collection depots will be arranged to collect end-of-life discarded electronic items. The e-waste thus collected will be shipped out of the country to specialist recycling companies where they will be processed using sustainable and environment-friendly techniques.

The partnership will launch a collection depot at Abidjan, where locals will be presented with an opportunity to dispose off their unwanted electronics and electrical items. The depot will accept household electronics and telecommunication devices such as computers, televisions, radios, routers, printers, cables etc. The campaign aims to cultivate recycling habits and minimize the harmful environmental impact associated with the unsafe disposal of unwanted electronic waste.

Ericsson is a Swedish multinational provider of communication technology and services. The company's offerings comprise services, software and infrastructure in information and communications technology for telecom operators and other industries.
