EPA fines Iowa scrap metal firm for storm water violations

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): Spencer, Iowa-based Shine Bros. Corp has been fined $120,000 by the US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) on charges of polluting nearby Pete’s Pond park and Little Sioux river.

According to EPA officials, a settlement has already been reached between EPA and the company. The company has agreed to pay the fine amount and has taken necessary measures to clean up the pollution in the park. It also announced that necessary care will be taken to prevent occurrence of such incidents.

EPA investigators had found that stormwater draining off the 38-acre Shine Brothers property was polluted. It also cited that the company failed to adhere to standards and failed to follow necessary inspection procedures at the site. Moreover, employees were not provided adequate training to carry out site operations.

The family-owned business established in 1902, currently processes scrap metal and ships the recycled material to customers around the globe. The company had received $78,000 in state tax credits towards expansion projects at the facility.
