ALBANY (Scrap Monster): Battery giant Energizer has launched new AA batteries made partially from recycled battery materials. The new battery named ‘EcoAdvanced’ is the first such attempt by any leading brand and that it will help reduce environmental impacts.
According to Energizer, the batteries will contain 4% recycled battery content. They are capable of reducing greenhouse emissions by over 7% when compared with other disposable batteries. However, the new batteries are priced nearly 25% higher than the traditional high performance batteries. A pack of 4 will cost about $5, the company said.
The company had spent almost seven long years researching on the project. The end result-‘EcoAdvanced’ reuses zinc and manganese from discarded alkaline batteries. According to Michelle Atkinson, Chief Marketing Officer, Energizer, only very few recyclers currently process these batteries as they are mostly thrown away as junk. The company hopes that more recyclers begin processing of such batteries. It plans to increase the recycled content to 40% by 2025.
The ‘EcoAdvanced’ batteries last longer than traditional alkaline batteries, thus reducing the number of batteries thrown into junk. They are the longest-lasting alkaline battery and the world’s first AA battery made with recyclable batteries. With the launch of ‘EcoAdvanced’, Energizer has created a use and value for recycled battery materials.
