District Council join hands with police to crackdown on unlicensed scrap metal dealers

EDGWARE (Scrap Monster): The Licensing Department under the South Derbyshire District Council has joined hands with Derbyshire Police to launch major crackdown on scrap metal dealers and collectors operating without a valid license. This follows widespread complaints from residents that many such dealers were still operating in South Derbyshire despite the strict laws which came into force recently.

As per guidelines of the recently introduced Scrap Metal Dealers Act, the dealers are required to pay only through crossed cheques or electronic transfer. The Act prohibits traders from dealing in cash. Traders who fail to obtain valid license or breach the licensing conditions or found making cash payments could be fined up to £5,000. They may also face punishments like limits on trading hours and complete shutdown of business.

A senior official at the South Derbyshire Licensing Department called for concentrated efforts to do away with the nuisance of unlicensed scrap collectors. He stated that such collectors would either require a site license or a collector’s license to conduct door-to-door collection activities. The license in full must be displayed on the collection vehicle, he added.
