Delmont, PA Awards Hauling, Recycling Contract to Republic Services

SEATTLE (Waste Advantage): Delmont residents will have curbside trash and recycling service by September, if not sooner.

Borough council this week awarded a four-year hauling and recycling bid to Republic Services.

The contract will expire the same time as Murrysville and Export’s dual contract, also with Republic Services. Delmont officials then hope to partner with those municipalities on a new contract.

Councilman David Weber said the quarterly cost for residents is projected to be $53. Senior citizens would pay $48 per quarter, and the fee for per-bag users will be $3.50. Republic would also honor per-bag tags from other haulers for up to 60 days once service takes effect.

Rates will rise by 2 to 3 percent in the second and third years of the contract, with a 10 percent jump in the fourth year.

“I think that (cost) will balance out when we bid on a new contract with Murrysville and Export,” Weber said.

The contract includes biweekly recycling as well as pickup of hazardous materials and large items. Republic will also do five leaf collections per year.

Weber received a round of applause Tuesday from the audience for his work on the issue, which stemmed from council’s 2016 decision to move the Delmont Lions Club’s recycling operation  off of borough property.

Public works supervisor Bill Heaps is excited for the leaf collections. “I don’t have to pick up leaves no more,” he said with a smile.
