Delay in govt policy action could lead to closure of NS recycling firm

HALIFAX (Scrap Monster): The state-of-the-art recycling facility in Burnside Park, Dartmouth is under threat of closure due to delay in government policy to make recycling of compact fluorescent light bulbs mandatory. According to company officials, it may be forced to sell the $400,000 Dan-X Recycling Ltd if favorable federal government rules are delayed further.

Company President Dave Hall stated that people will not bring old bulbs to them if they do not fall under mandatory recycling requirement. Instead, they will land up in some garbage containers. According to him, these bulbs contain small portions of lead, which when collectively added up, poses significant environmental threats. Recycling of the bulbs, ensures that these harmful lead particles do not pose life threats to humans.

The plant is said to have a recycling capacity of nearly 10,000 compact fluorescent bulbs per hour. The facility had been idle for most of the time. It had won some contracts from provincial government agencies, but only enough to run the plant for a short period. The facility faces shortage of bulbs to keep it operating. Recently the company had laid off three workers.

The implementation of mandatory recycling requirement is feared to take more time. According to sources, Nova Scotia government may take years to get the policy implemented. However, the company sees no point in hanging around there without business for years.

Dan-X Recycling Ltd, founded in 2009 by Mr. Dave Hall and Mr. Dana Emmerson is Nova Scotia’s first established mercury lamp recycling company.
