Cumberland County Electronics Recycling Collection Exceeds Target

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Cumberland County Electronics Recycling Center at 1001 Claremont Road in Middlesex Township, Carlisle has recorded impressive collection rates during the initial days of its operation.

The news release issued by Cumberland County states that the recycling center has serviced more than 1,400 customers during the first 16 days of operation since its official opening in July. The recycling center collected around 138,000 pounds of electronics waste, surpassing the projected collection for the entire year. Justin C. Miller, coordinator of the country’s recycling programs noted that they had initially projected collection of around 300,000 pounds per year. However, the present collection figures suggest that more than one-third of the projected collection has already been reached within the short duration.

It must be noted that the electronics recycling center had serviced nearly 200 customers on the first two days of its opening, thereby collecting more than 17,000 pounds of used electronics for recycling.

The recycling center is open to public two days per week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays 2 PM to 6 PM. In addition, the center is also open on second and fourth Saturdays of every month from 9 AM to 1 PM. The center accepts a wide range of electronics including televisions, computers and accessories, home appliances, office equipment, lab & medical equipment, mobile devices, entertainment devices, data center equipment and cable equipment.

Disassembled televisions are not accepted at the center. The unacceptable items also include smoke detectors, devices containing liquid mercury or freon, PCB containing materials, broken CRTs, household hazardous waste, radioactive materials, large appliances, batteries, yard equipment, CDs, DVDs, VHS Tapes, Cassette Tapes and Propane Tanks.

The recycling center collects 50 cents from customers for every pound of electronics dropped at the facility. Out of this, the recycler is allowed to retain 41 cents as charges to cover recycling costs. The remaining 9 cents goes to the County as a cover to their expenses. The center accepts cash payments as well as credit and debit card payments. It charges 1.5% convenience fee for debit card users and a 2.5% convenience fee for credit card users. The center also offers pre-booking facility for unusually large loads of electronics waste.

Incidentally, Pennsylvania's electronics recycling law passed in 2010 bans televisions and computer equipment from disposal as solid waste.
