Crude Steel Production by the Americas Declined Further in August

According to the recent data published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by South and North American regions declined considerably during the month of August this year.

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): According to the recent data published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by South American countries dropped significantly during the month of August this year. The total monthly output declined by 6.6% to 3.491 Million tonnes (Mt). The North American crude steel output too declined by 3.0% during the month.

The total crude steel production by Argentina during August was 343,000 tonnes, down considerably by 27.5% than the August 2015 production of 474,000 tonnes. Brazil produced 2.768 Million tonnes of crude steel, marginally by 1.1% when compared to 2.799 Million tonnes production achieved during August last year. The output by Chile recovered by nearly 0.9% to 100,000 tonnes in August this year. The total crude steel production by Colombia dropped by 10.7% to 105,000 tonnes in August this year.

Ecuador’s crude steel output dropped significantly by 22.4% on year-on-year basis. The crude steel output by Ecuador was 50,000 tonnes in August this year, down when compared with 64,000 tonnes during August last year.  Paraguay’s crude steel output increased sharply by nearly 13% during the month.

The crude steel output by Peru increased modestly by 32.9% year-on-year. The crude steel output of Uruguay dropped significantly by over 45% when compared with the year before levels. Venezuelan production dropped considerably by 89.1% year-on-year from 92,000 tonnes to 10,000 tonnes.

The following table provides cumulative crude steel output for the initial eight-month period of year 2016 in comparison with the corresponding eight-months from January to August in 2015.

Meantime, the crude steel production by North American countries dropped by 3.0% during the month of August year-on-year. The production totaled 9.548 Mt in August this year as against 9.839 Mt recorded in August ‘15.

The total crude steel production by Canada during August this year was 1.100 Mt, declining marginally by 1.6% when compared with the August 2015 production. The US produced 6.703 Million tonnes of crude steel, slightly lower by 3.4% when compared to 6.936 Million tonnes production achieved during August 2015. The total crude steel production by Mexico inched higher by 1.9% from 1.659 Mt in August ‘15 to 1.690 Mt in August this year.

The Cuban crude steel production decreased sharply by 20.1% year-on-year to 20,000 tonnes. The crude steel output by El Salvador was estimated at 10,000 tonnes in August this year, down slightly when compared with August last year. Guatemala produced 25,000 tonnes in August, lower by 29.7% when matched with the production during the same month a year before. The crude steel output by Trinidad & Tobago nosedived to zero in August this year from 54,000 tonnes during same month the previous year.

The following table provides cumulative crude steel output for the first eight months of 2016 in comparison with those during the same period in 2015.
