Crude steel output by African region plunged 11% in September '14

KAMPALA (Scrap Monster): According to the recent data published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by the African region fell sharply by 10.8% during the month of September year-on-year.

The total crude steel production by Algeria during September was 35,000 tonnes, rising sharply by 415.8% in comparison with the September 2013 production of 7,0000 tonnes. Egypt produced 451,000 tonnes of crude steel, down 23.8% when compared to 592,000 tonnes production achieved during September 2013. Libya’s crude steel output almost doubled to 80,000 tonnes during the month of September this year. Morocco’s output dropped to 1,000 tonnes of crude steel, when compared to 49,000 tonnes production achieved during September 2013. South Africa’s crude steel output dropped 3.1% from 619,000 tonnes to 600,000 tonnes year-on-year.

When compared with the previous month, Algerian crude steel output remained flat. Egypt’s output has declined sharply when compared with 750,000 tonnes during August this year. Libyan crude steel output in September ’14 remained flat over the previous month. Morocco’s production witnessed considerable dip during the month. South African production almost unchanged.

The following table provides cumulative crude steel output for the first nine months in 2014 in comparison with those during same period in 2013.
