Court Insists India to Pull Back Goddess Coins

NEW DELHI (Scrap Monster): Should a coin be pulled back because it bears a religious symbol on the reverse?

According to Delhi High Court, being a secular country where every religion has an equal share, India might not commit the mistake that had issued 5 Rupee and 10 Rupee coins embossing Vaishnavo Devi, a Hindu goddess last year. On Wednesday, the court was hearing the petition submitted by Mr. Nafis Qazi against the commemorative coins.

The court also criticized RBI for not considering the religious sentiments. The coins are against India’s constitutional provisions, the court added.

The commemorative coins were released by RBI last year with the inscription, “silver jubilee of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board”.

It is said that despite the incessant warnings from the Delhi High Court regarding the coins, the central government denied the court’s arguments by saying the coins were issued under the Coinage Act.
