Containerboard and boxboard production increased in July '14: AF&PA

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The Washington D.C.-headquartered American Forest and Paper Association (AF&PA) has released the production statistics for the month of July this year.

According to the statistics, the containerboard production increased 2.7% in July this year when compared with the production during the previous month. However, the production remained more or less flat when compared with those during the same month a year ago. The operating rate declined from 97.1% a month ago to 96.1% in July ’14, primarily due to addition of new capacities.

The production of boxboard increased 2.8% year-on-year. When compared with the prior month, the boxboard production during July this year was higher by 2.4%, AF&PA noted.

The total kraft paper shipments during July totaled 122,400 tons, 5% lower when compared with the previous month. Out of this, bleached kraft paper shipments constituted 9,600 tons whereas the balance 112,800 tons accounted for unbleached kraft paper shipments. AF &PA notes that bleached paper kraft shipments increased 14.3% over the previous month while unbleached paper craft shipments dropped significantly by 6.50% in July ‘14. The cumulative kraft paper shipments during the initial seven-month period in 2014 were 2.5% lower than the corresponding period last year.

The AF&PA monthly report also indicates that the total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 6 percent in July compared to July 2013, with total paper inventories declining 1 percent compared to June.
