BOGOTA (Scrap Monster): Colombian steel workers union Sintrametal is planning strikes and blockades to urge federal government not to sign FTA with Turkey due to the fact that the country is now importing large amounts of Turkish steel products.

Mauricio Castro, the president of Sintrametal said that they are seeking alliances with different sectors to support the strikes.

Besides, the governor of Boyaca is also working with Sintrametal. Boyaca accounts for 52% of the country´s steel production.

In fact, Brazilian steelmaker Gerdau has closed its two plants in Colombia due to sharp increase in steel imports into local market and there will be more job losses for local steelmakers, Castro said.
