Cleveland demands tougher law to fight rising metal thefts

COLUMBUS (Scrap Monster): Cleveland leaders have called for tougher laws to crack down on rising metal theft incidents in northeast Ohio City. Councilmen propose uniform implementation of statewide regulation across Ohio cities to fight the menace. In addition, scrap yards need to be more vigilant if the chain of theft incidents is to be brought under control.

Metal theft incidents have hit new high in Cleveland. Thieves are seen targeting larger businesses and city owned properties. Recently, the parts of aluminum football stand at the now closed South High School were stolen. The suspects of the act are yet to be identified.

According to Cleveland Councilman Tony Brancatelli, the city needs to implement improved scrapping laws, by imposing ban on sale of certain scrap items to yards. The sellers must also prove their identity as licensed contractors before they could sell the item.

The City currently has tight protocols in place for scrap yard operations. Majority of scrap dealers accept items only upon proper identity verification. They even collect their contact details, take photograph of the seller and videotape the sold items. The police agencies can easily accesss complete details of the transactions once they are updated in LeadsOnline database.

However, not all dealers adhere to this practice. Moreover, Ohio lacks a statewide protocol to fight against the criminal act. Presently, each city has its own laws to tackle the issue.
