Chinese scrap imports declined in May

The Chinese scrap imports dropped during the month of May this year. The country's scrap imports totaled 220,000 tons during the month, 3.1% lower when compared with the previous month.

BEIJING (Scrap Monster): As per the most recent data, the scrap imports by China during the month of May this year declined sharply over the previous year. Also, imports were down when compared with those during April this year.

The country’s scrap imports during May 2015 totaled 220,000 tons. The imports dropped by 3.10% year on year. The country had imported 227,000 tons of scrap during the same month last year. When compared with the previous month, the scrap imports by the country too were down by 3.10%. China had imported 226,900 tons of scrap during April this year.

The cumulative scrap imports by the country during the initial five-month period of the year totaled 1.06 million tons, higher by nearly 5% when compared with the imports during the corresponding five-month period from January to May in 2014. The Chinese scrap imports had totaled 1.01 million tons during Jan-May ‘14.

During January to March this year, Japan was the largest scrap exporter to China. The scrap imports from Japan totaled 868,000 tons, accounting for almost 82% of the country’s total scrap imports. However, the scrap imports from Japan fell by 1.5% year-on-year. The second largest exporter of scrap to China was the US. The scrap imports by the country from the US totaled 69,000 tons. In third place was South Korea with 39,000 tons.
