Chile Copper exports revenue in May hit lowest since Jan: Central bank

SANTIAGO (Scrap Monster): Chile copper exports revenue dropped to $3.302 billion in May this year to its lowest since January, as per latest central bank data released on Thursday.

According to the central bank data,

--Chile copper export revenue dipped sharply by 7.9% from April's $3.583 billion and 16% lower than May 2011's $3.937 billion.

--Copper cathode export revenue in May of this year totaled $1.677 billion while concentrate export revenue reached $1.312 billion.

--The nation's overall mining exports value, including molybdenum, iron, silver, iodine and lithium, fell to $3.69 billion in May from $4.36 billion the same month a year earlier.

Chile copper exports revenue rose 6% year-on-year to $42.63 billion in 2011, while the value of its total mining exports grew 9% on the year to $48.15 billion.

Chile is the world's largest copper-mining country, producing a third of global supply. The Andean nation's mining industry represents about 15% of the country's gross domestic product (GDP).

LME Copper prices fell 11% in May this year for a third straight monthly decline and the biggest since September 2011, slammed by a surging dollar, a lower demand outlook and investor flight from risk.
