CFPA sees bright prospects for Canadian wood products in India

VANCOUVER (Scrap Monster): The Coast Forest Products Association (CFPA) has predicted huge demand growth for Canadian wood products in the Indian market. According to Rick Jeffery, President & CEO, CFPA, key buyers in the country have shown increased interest in Canadian softwood lumber and other products such as Canadian yellow cedar and hemlock during recent times.

The Canadian government and the BC provincial administration have made huge investments to expand the wood products export to the country. Nearly $2 million was invested during 2014 alone. Forestry Innovation Investment (FII) in partnership with Government of Canada has established an office in Mumbai to tap the emerging opportunities for BC wood products.

CFPA sees immense opportunities as shift in preference among the younger population in India may lead to likely replacement of hardwoods like teak with softwood lumber from Canada. The acute scarcity of traditional woods in India may boost the demand for other species such as Canadian yellow cedar and hemlock.

The Canadian government and provincial administration must step up marketing efforts to educate the potential Indian consumers and buyers about the advantages of Canadian wood products. In addition, huge investment is required to improve the supply chain, as it takes almost six weeks in transit time for wood products from Canada to reach Indian destination.

According to government statistics, Canadian exports of wood and wood articles to India totaled $11.6 million in 2013. Lumber and related products constituted $11.3 among that. The value of wood products exports to India has risen five-fold in 2014 when compared with 2009. Also, India is a priority market for the country under the Global Markets Action Plan.
