Cell phone recycling to fund free talk time to military members

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): Kyocera Communications Inc. and Cell Phones for Soldiers- a national non-profit have urged Seattle residents to recycle their unwanted cell phones. The phones thus collected will be recycled and will be used to fund a free phone service to military members and military veterans. Recycling of each discarded mobile phone would fund 30 minutes of free talk time. The campaign is being launched in connection with the Seattle Seafair running from July through August.

Kyocera urged Seattle residents attending the Seafair to take time to drop off their unwanted cell phones at designated collection boxes, which in turn will help members of armed forces to connect with their family members. The boxes are placed at Kyocera’s booth located next to the Hydroplanes 101 exhibit and also at Seafair Guest Services stations at Genesee Park. It must be noted that Kyocera, through its recycling programs in the past, has provided more than 50,000 minutes of free communication time.

According to US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates, approximately 2 billion mobile phones are sold every year across the globe. The US recycles only 13% of its unused phones, while the remaining 87% ends up in landfills or incinerators.

Kyocera Communications, Inc. is a division of Kyocera Corporation that creates innovative products including mobile phones, solar power generating systems, printers, copiers, electronic components, semiconductor packages, cutting tools and industrial components. ‘Cell Phones for Soldiers’ is a national nonprofit dedicated to providing cost-free communication services to active-duty military members and veterans. Founded in 2004, it has provided more than 216 million “Minutes That Matter” to servicemen and women.
