WASHINGTON (Scrap Monster) : The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) has released the results of the national survey conducted by Northeast Recycling Council on Cathode ray tube (CRT) glass management.
The survey funded by CEA was conducted during March-April among the certified e-scrap recycling firms across the country. 82 companies participated in the online survey, out of them 70 were invited. 12 companies participated in the survey voluntarily.
The major findings of the study are listed below:-
- Ample markets and downstream vendors currently exist for most electronics recyclers who responded to the survey;
- Recyclers typically rely on intermediary or downstream vendors to process their glass;
- The amount of CRT volume sent for processing remains the primary cost differentiator, with smaller lumes incurring higher per-unit costs; and
- Market supply of CRTs is relatively stable or even decreasing for at least half of all recyclers who responded to the survey.
As CRT technology has been displaced in the television and computer market by liquid crystal display (LCD), light-emitting diode (LED) and plasma displays, the demand for old CRT glass to make new CRT glass has waned. Since CRT glass is now the largest portion of the CE recycling stream, there is a greater need for new, environmentally sound, economically sustainable uses for this material.
