Cascades to invest $11.3 million to modernize Quebec plant

MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): Cascades will invest $11.3 million in two major projects at its Cabano, Quebec plant. The proposed projects, with the support of provincial government will result in significant reduction in heavy fuel oil consumption, thereby leading to considerable lessening of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

Announcing the investment, Ministers Pierre Arcand and Jean D'Amour, and Cascades President and Chief Executive Officer Mario Plourde stated that the proposed projects will receive $5.2 million in financial aid from Quebec government. The balance $6.1 million will be invested by the company. The project comprises of upgrading one residual forest biomass boiler with automated controls. Also, a new combustion chamber and combustion air preheater will be installed to the other boiler. The upgrades at these boilers will ensure better operating time and enhanced efficiency. At the same time, it will lead to significant reduction in GHG emissions by limiting the use of a third boiler which operates on heavy-fuel oil.

Pierre Arcand, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources noted that the announced investment is part of ongoing steps that Cascades has been taking in the area of energy efficiency. He commended Cacasdes’ participation in various energy transition efforts since the announcement of the ambitious 2030 Energy Policy, which targets 15% enhancement to energy efficiency. Meantime, Jean D'Amour, Minister for Maritime Affairs and Minister stated that Cascades has turned out to become a role model for Quebec companies in getting involved with the government’s energy transition initiatives. The two projects clearly prove that it is highly possible to combine environmental responsibility and economic development, he added.

Meantime, Mario Plourde, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cascades thanked the employees in helping it to achieve high energy efficiency rate among its peers. The company uses nearly 3% less energy to manufacture same products when matched with the industry average. The announced projects are part of a long list of environmental initiatives that continue to make Cascades a leader in sustainable development.

Earlier towards end-2016, Cascades had partnered with non-governmental organization David Suzuki Foundation as part of its efforts to expand its environmental values. As part of its sustainability efforts, Cascades Inc., had launched 2016-2020 Sustainable Development Plan by which it had set ambitious goals over the five-year period. The Plan aims 7% reduction in the amount of energy it buys to make its products. The company also targets 7% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 207 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2015 to 192 kilograms in 2020. In addition, the Plan also aims to increase the beneficial use of recovered residuals from 76% in 2015 to 80% in 2020.

Founded in 1964, Cascades produces, converts and markets packaging and tissue products that are composed mainly of recycled fibres. The Company employs close to 11,000 employees, who work in over 90 production units located in North America and Europe. From a manufacturer of primarily paper and cartonboard, the Corporation has emerged as the largest collector of recyclable materials in Canada, as well as one of the major converters of corrugated packaging products, tissue papers and specialty products in North America.
