Cascades to build new tissue converting plant on the US West Coast

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): Cascades Inc., has announced its decision to build a new tissue converting plant on the American West Coast. The plant will be located on the industrial property adjacent to the Scappoose Industrial Airpark at Scappoose, Oregon, USA and will see an investment of $64 million. The new facility featuring state-of-the-art converting lines is expected to be commissioned by the first quarter of 2017. The construction works at the plant will begin upon completion of the municipal permit process.

The company press release noted that the proposed plant will manufacture virgin and recycled bathroom tissue products and paper hand towels for the Away from Home market. The proximity of the company’s tissue paper plant in St. Helens will ensure the supply to the new unit. The plant will have a capacity to produce around six million cases per year. The plant is expected to create 200 jobs during the construction phase. Upon commencement of operations, it is expected to generate 80 full time positions.

According to Mario Plourde, President and Chief Executive Officer of Cascades, the new plant will enable the company to increase its capacity to better serve its customers. The project is part of the company’s strategic development plan and will help to improve its integration rate and coverage of the US West Coast region. The strategic location of the plant offers great potential for future growth, added Plourde.

Meantime, Jean Jobin, President and Chief Operating Officer of Cascades Tissue Group noted that the investment will help Cascades to consolidate its presence in Oregon and on the West Coast. It is a major step towards achieving the set goal of expanding into key markets in the southern and western markets. The new plant, equipped with most modern machinery, will win additional market share, he added.

The project is being supported by incentive programs from local, regional and state governments.

Recent acquisitions

Earlier this month, the company had announced that Norampac, its containerboard packaging division, has successfully completed acquisition of a Newton, Connecticut plant owned by Rand-Whitney Container LLC. The corrugated packaging plant was purchased in exchange of equipment and customer base of Cascades’ Norampac New England plant located in Thompson, Connecticut.
