Call2Recycle's battery collection surged 328% in mandated provinces

MONTREAL (Scrap Monster) : Call2Recycle- the product stewardship program providing no-cost battery and cell phone recycling solution has reported significant surge in collection rates in the mandated municipalities in British Columbia, Manitoba and Quebec provinces which named Call2Recycle as the official battery stewardship program. The collection rates have shown considerable increase in other municipalities across the country.

The government-mandated provincial programs collected nearly 625,000 kilograms of alkaline and rechargeable batteries so far this year via Call2Recycle.The battery collection rates surged by over 328% when compared with the corresponding period in 2012. But data suggests that it was not only in the three provinces, but also across all municipalities in the country that battery collection rates have gone high. The nationwide collection rates increased 273% year-on-year.

The increased municipality and retail participation in all the three mandated provinces resulted in high growth in collection of both rechargeable and alkaline batteries.

Call2Recycle is a non-profit organization that recycles the collected batteries & cellphones into a variety of re-usable products and materials to eliminate hazardous waste from being landfilled. Since 1996, Call2Recycle program has diverted more than 75 million pounds (35 million kg) of rechargeable batteries from local landfills. In 2012, it collected more than 10 million pounds (4.5 million kg) of batteries. The first U.S. recycling program of its kind to achieve Responsible Recycling (R2) certification, Call2Recycle has a wide network of 30,000 participating sites throughout the U.S. and Canada.
