Call2Recycle collected 1.7 million kilograms of used batteries so far in 2013

MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): Call2Recycle- the product stewardship program providing no-cost battery and cellphone recycling solutions, is all set to touch new record highs in 2013. It has collected 1.7 million kilograms of used batteries across Canada so far in 2013. The collection until October this year has surpassed the collection during entire 2012 by 27%.

The provinces of British Columbia, Manitoba, and Quebec had selected Call2Recycle to run its mandated household battery stewardship program. The increased municipality and retail participation in all the three mandated provinces resulted in high growth in collection of both rechargeable and alkaline batteries. The battery collection in mandated provinces grew 3.5 times higher than the non-mandated provinces. The rate of battery collection from retail channel during the initial ten months of the year surged by nearly 87% year-on-year in Ontario.

Call2Recycle is a non-profit organization that recycles the collected batteries & cellphones into a variety of re-usable products and materials to eliminate hazardous waste from being landfilled. Since 1996, Call2Recycle program has diverted more than 75 million pounds (35 million kg) of rechargeable batteries from local landfills. In 2012, it collected more than 10 million pounds (4.5 million kg) of batteries. The first U.S. recycling program of its kind to achieve Responsible Recycling (R2) certification, Call2Recycle has a wide network of 30,000 participating sites throughout the U.S. and Canada.
