Californian E-scrap processor fined for water pollution violations

LOS ANGELES (Scrap Monster): Metech Recycling Inc’s Gilroy, California facility has been sued by a local organization for alleged water pollution violations. The Woodland, CA-based California Sportfishing Protection Alliance (CSPA) has named the company in the civil suit filed by the organization.

According to the lawsuit, the company is being alleged to have discharged pollutant-contaminated stormwater from the facility into nearby waterways. The Gilroy facility is alleged to lack proper pollution prevention plans. It points out that the facility does not have essential structural controls such as grading, berming and roofing to prevent the stormwater from getting into contact with contaminants.

The company’s acts are in clear violation of state and federal acts, states the lawsuit. It demands the company to pay civil penalties of $37,500 per day per violation starting from Jan. 12, 2009. The company officials were not available for a comment.

Metech Recycling operates four more e-scrap processing facilities in Colorado, Massachusetts, North Carolina and Utah, in addition to the one in California. According to company website, all the five locations are certified to the standards of e-Stewards, ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004.
