Cairo Airport Customs Seize 20 Authentic Coins

CAIRO (Scrap Monster): Cairo Airport Customs seized a luggage of a Sudanese citizen, which contained 20 authentic coins. The archeological department confirmed that the coins belong to different Islamic and modern periods, including the era of Mohammed Ali.

Head of the Archeological Unit for Ports, Ahmed El-Rawi reported that the Sudanese citizen was on his way to New Zealand. Head told the reporters that the coins were likely to be stolen from the damaged Museum of Islamic Art.

The Museum was partially damaged due to a car bomb attack in January. Among the coins, 11 belongs to the Higra era of 1200 to 1277, which was inscribed some Arabic text. Seven coins dated to Sultan Hassan Kamil ruling period, inscribed with foliage on one side.

The other two coins belong to reign of Kings Fouad and Farouk. Ahmed told, all the recovered coins will be restored soon. They are also seeking to display the coins in the recovered artifact exhibition at the Egyptian Museum.
