Brown County scrap metal dealer ordered to pay $20,000 in penalties

MADISON (Scrap Monster): The state Attorney General’s office passed judgment against Green Bay scrap metal dealer, ordering the company to pay $20,000 in penalties for violation of Wisconsin laws.

The scrap metal dealer-Metals America LLC and its owner Harvey Siegel are ordered to pay the above amount in forfeitures, court costs, and mandatory surcharges for improper disposal of refrigerants. According to the Attorney General’s office, the company violated laws by releasing ozone-depleting refrigerant gases into atmosphere.

The incident took place in 2011 between June 1^st and September 8^th. The complaint states that Siegel directed the employees to cut the refrigerant lines on at least 145 refrigerant-bearing appliances such as freezers, refrigerators, dehumidifiers, and air conditioners.

The order was signed by Brown County Circuit Judge Kendall Kelley on Tuesday.
