Brazil's pig iron exports tumbled in April

SAO PAULO (Scrap Monster): According to statistics provided by SECEX- Foreign Trade Secretariat, the pig iron exports by Brazil during the month of April this year fell sharply when compared on month-on-month and year-on-year basis.

Brazil’s pig iron exports totaled 49,936 tons during April ’15. The total exports plunged heavily by 79.8% from the previous month. The country’s pig iron exports had totaled 247,061 tons during the month of March this year. When compared with the exports during the same month a year before, the Apr ’15 pig iron exports were down by 80.5%.

The primary destination of Brazilian merchant pig iron was Canada. The country imported 29,100 tons of pig iron from Brazil during the month. In second place was Taiwan with 14,256 tons. The imports by the US plunged to 4 tons. The average export price to Canada stood at $270 per ton FOB, whereas exports to Taiwan averaged at $300 per ton FOB.

The pig iron exports by the country during the initial four months of the year totaled 776,000 tons. The exports fell marginally by 0.2% during January to April this year when matched with the corresponding four-month period in 2014.

The largest importer during the initial four-month period in 2015 was the US with 531,000 tons. The second largest importer was the Netherlands. The imports by the Netherlands totaled 61,000 tons.
