The British Plastics Federation (BPF) has called for incentives to boost the usage of recycled polymers by the UK recycling and manufacturing industry

LONDON (Scrap Monster) : The British Plastics Federation (BPF) has called for incentives to boost the usage of recycled polymers by the UK recycling and manufacturing industry.

The BPF has put forward a proposal that aims to encourage the use of recycled polymers in the country’s manufacturing operations. The proposal which has its origin in the BPF’s Recycling Group (BPFRG) unveils the importance of securing end-market for recyclables. The Federation noted that the collection of plastics needs to be increased by another 500,000 metric tons per year for the country to achieve the stipulated EU recycling targets.

The export of plastic scrap has been a major contributor to the high recycling rates by the country. The recent ‘Green Fence’ measures to restrict entry of low quality scrap into their country by the Chinese administration have clamped down the exports to that country. The export of plastic scrap to other countries also is seen facing challenges.

The usage of recycled polymers could help manufacturers, fillers and retailers to offset their PRN obligations. BPF believes that the proposals would enhance the end-market for recycled polymers.Recycling can effectively happen only when there are markets for recycled materials. The proposal also underlines the importance of increasing the quality of recycling along with concentrating on the quantity.

The British Plastics Federation (BPF) is the leading trade association for the UK Plastic Industry, with over 450 members and 1200 affiliated members, encompassing the whole plastic industry supply chain including raw material suppliers, processors, machinery suppliers and recyclers.
