BLS data suggests drop in recordable workplace injuries and illnesses during 2015

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics has released workplace injury and illness data for 2015. The data indicates downward trend in total recordable cases of workplace injury and illness across all industries. The rate of injuries and illness reported decline by waste and remediation sector.

According to BLS report, private industry employers reported approximately 2.9 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illness in 2015. The total recordable cases for private industry declined to 3 per 100 full-time workers in 2015, as compared with 3.2 during the year prior to that. The private industry employers reported nearly 48,000 fewer nonfatal injury and illness cases in 2015. This coupled with increase in reported hours worked has led to fall of total recordable cases by 0.2 cases per 100 full-time workers. The rate of cases involving days away from work too has declined by 0.1 cases per 100 full-time workers.

Majority of private industry sectors including mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction; manufacturing; transportation and warehousing; finance and insurance; health care and social assistance; and accommodation and food services reported decline in rate of injuries and illness in 2015. Wholesale trade was the only sector to report increase in the rate of injuries and illness in 2015. The rates rose from 2.9 cases per 100 full-time workers in 2014 to 3.1 cases in 2015. The rate of injuries and illness remained highest among mid-size private industry establishments that employ anywhere between 50 to 249 workers. Small establishments employing fewer than 11 workers reported the lowest rate.

Out of the 2.9 million nonfatal workplace injuries and illness in 2015, injuries accounted for nearly 2.8 million (95.2%). Among injuries, nearly 2.1 million were reported by service-providing industries. The remaining 0.7 million injuries occurred in goods-producing industries. Workplace illness totaled around 0.1 million cases during the year. Service-providing industries accounted for 64.7% of private industry illness cases, whereas the goods-producing industries accounted for the balance 35.4% cases. Also, the rates among individual illness categories remained unchanged during the year.

The public sector recorded nearly 752,600 cases of injury and illness in 2015. The total recordable cases for public sector industries remained almost unchanged at 5.1 cases per 100 full-time workers. The sector had reported rate of 5.0 cases during 2014. Approximately 4 in 5 injuries and illnesses reported in the public sector occurred among local government workers in 2015. The incident rate of injuries and illnesses among state government workers declined significantly from 2014. Meantime, the rate among local government workers remained mostly unchanged from the previous year.

The total recordable cases of workplace injury and illness in the waste management and remedial services category decreased from 5.1 per 100 in 2014 to 4.5 per 100 in 2015. The total rate of recordable cases for solid waste collection employees was 6.6 per 100, down significantly when compared with the rate of 7.1 per 100 during the prior year. The BLS data indicates that solid waste collection segment under the waste and remediation sector recorded the highest rate of incidences in 2015.
