Blast at Gold manufacturing unit: Death toll rises to 7

MUMBAI (Scrap Monster): The death toll in the explosion which took place in a gold manufacturing unit in Southern India has gone up to seven, according to media reports. The mishap occurred last week while transferring cooking gas from a large cylinder into smaller ones at a gold ornaments manufacturing unit in the Southern Indian state of Kerala.

Two persons had died on the spot itself. Around twenty were injured and admitted to hospitals. Three of them died on subsequent days. With two more persons succumbing to injuries today, the total death toll has now risen to seven. Earlier, ten persons with up to 80% burns were admitted to hospital. Five out of the ten have already died and the remaining five are still battling for their lives.

According to police, the explosion destroyed the entire first floor of the building, where the manufacturing unit was housed. The investigations are still under progress. However, preliminary reports indicate that the gold manufacturing unit lacked proper permissions and approvals. The investigation team also found that no proper safety precautions were implemented at the unit.

The owner of the unit was arrested on charges for violating various sections of Indian Explosives Act. He was later remanded to judicial custody.

It is the second major accident in the same district in six months. A similar cylinder blast had seriously injured three people at another gold jewellery manufacturing unit last November.
