BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster): The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) has released the Paper World Mirror for the month of January 2016.

The domestic collection of recovered paper witnessed significant improvement in major Asian countries. A number of mills in China and elsewhere in Asia have reportedly switched to cheaper domestic supplies. This has limited the upside of recovered paper exports to these destinations. Also, imported volumes recorded sharp decline in these countries.

OCC prices dropped sharply during the fourth quarter of the previous year. The prices dropped sharply from US$ 165 per tonne during the beginning of the quarter to US$ 155-plus per tonne by mid-November. The prices dropped further to below $150 per tonne towards the end of the year. Also, mixed paper prices dropped sharply from nearly $130 per tonne at the beginning of Q4 2015 to end the year at around $112 per tonne. Countries such as India, Indonesia and Vietnam witnessed lower import demand despite declining prices.

Indonesian domestic mills were forced to extend downtimes on account of cheaper imports of paper and board products from China, South Korea and Sweden. Vietnamese administration has hinted at imposing import taxes to safeguard the local paper industry in the country.

The mixed paper demand has softened in the UK. The prices have also witnessed downfall during the last quarter of the year 2015. However, mixed paper domestic orders remained strong in Italy. The demand for soft mixed paper dropped in the country. Strong supply of all recovered paper grades led to moderate price drop in Germany. On the contrary, OCC and mixed paper prices climbed higher in Turkey during Q4 2015. The price increase is likely to persist during early-2016 as well.

The demand for news grades paper has dropped across Sweden on account of significant drop in consumption by Stora Enso Hylte newsprint mill. Meantime, recovered paper deliveries from Russia witnessed huge decline. Finalnd recovered paper market continued to remain stable with good demand for all grades. Recovered paper collections by Czech Republic climbed higher by almost 15% last year. On the other hand, Spanish recovered paper market continued to remain under pressure during the quarter.
