Battery recycling rate by members jumped 10% in 2012: EBRA

BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster) : The battery recycling rate in 2012 registered a growth of 10% over the previous year, says European Battery Recycling Association (EBRA). The members of the association recycled 386,000 tonnes of waste batteries in 2012. The batteries include all types of rechargeable and non-rechargeable portable, industrial and automotive batteries. Lead-acid batteries are being exempted from the list.

The association had earlier issued EU Battery Directive to all its members, which made it mandatory for all member states to achieve a collection rate of at least 25 per cent of spent portable batteries from 2012. The target of 25% has boosted the recycling rate by the member states, the association claimed. The details of collection rates by individual states were not available.

All types of batteries have seen their recycled tonnage increasing. However the growth is more noticeable for secondary batteries (industrial NiCd, NiMH and Li-Ion portable). The decrease in tonnage for portable NiCd is already visible.

The EBRA aims to develop the highest standards of professionalism in the battery recycling industry by promoting best practice in health, safety and environment and by preserving natural resources while respecting the European regulatory framework.
