BAN announces launch of Mobile App to manage Electronic Waste

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): The environmental watchdog and promoter group- Basel Action Network (BAN) has announced the launch of ‘e-Stewards Global Impact Calculator’- a new mobile application that will help to gauge the positive environmental benefits of using e-Stewards certified recyclers to mange electronic waste.

According to Jim Puckett, Director, BAN, e-Stewards certified recyclers could make use of this application to demonstrate the impacts they make towards greener and safer world. The application provides metrics related to greenhouse gases avoided, toxic metals diverted from landfills and dump yards and precious metals recovered during recycling process.

The application was created to promote the benefits of ethical recycling. According to rough estimates, nearly 80% of the electronic waste delivered to recyclers is not properly recycled. Instead, they are loaded into container ships and exported to various countries in Africa and Asia, where they are dismantled using primitive techniques, posing huge threat to environment.

The application is currently available on the Apple Store for free. ‘e-Stewards Global Impact Calculator’ tool will be soon available for Android operating system as well.

The Basel Action Network (BAN) is a non-governmental charitable organization working to combat the export of toxic waste, toxic technology and toxic products from industrialized societies to developing countries.
