Arkansas recycled 45.5% of discarded materials during fiscal 2015

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The most recent State of Recycling report published by the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) indicates that the state recycled almost half of all solid waste during fiscal 2015. The report is based on data collected from community recycling programs from July 2014 to June 2015 and from businesses during the whole year 2014.

As per the report, the recycling rate jumped higher from 39% in fiscal 2014 to 45.5% in fiscal 2015. Out of the discarded waste materials, 5.7 billion pounds were recycled. It must be noted that the state had recycled only 4.2 billion pounds of waste in fiscal 2014. The amount of waste that ended up in landfills also increased from 6.5 billion pounds in fiscal 2014 to 6.8 billion pounds in fiscal 2015. The total waste stream increased by 17% during the fiscal.

The rise in recycling of steel and iron was the key contributor to the overall rise in recycling rates. Metal recycling rates witnessed the largest increase of 52%. Plastic recycling rates too jumped significantly higher by 46% year-on-year from 168.3 million pounds during fiscal 2014 to 245.7 million pounds in fiscal 2015. Also, electronics recycling increased by 49% year-on-year.

According to ADEQ report, the recycling rates have continued to rise despite low metal prices and reduction in weight of recyclables. Businesses that report regularly have shown increase in recycling rates this year too. In addition, more businesses reported their recycling efforts during the year, ADEQ report noted.

The report also states that nearly $3.6 million was disbursed to the 18 regional solid waste management districts through the Recycling Distribution Program in FY2015. More than $2.3 million was disbursed through the Arkansas Computer and Electronic Waste Recycling Grants Program. Also, $200,000 was distributed through the Computer and Electronic Recycling Grants Program.
