Arcelor Mittal Montreal optimizes scrap recycling operations

MONTREAL (Scrap Monster): Arcelor Mittal Montreal has announced restructuring of its scrap recycling operations in the region by announcing Contrecoeur-Feruni as the main platform to serve the region’s need. It also announced sale of Ottawa and La Prairie recycling operations. According to the company, the strategic decision will help the company better serve its internal and external clients.

The scrap shredding, processing and sorting activities for the Contrecoeur steelworks will be taken care of by Contrecoeur scrap recycling and processing center. As part of converting the center as the main platform to support steel works, the idled shredder will be put back to operation. The commencement of shredder activities is expected to generate at least ten new jobs in the region.

While making the announcement, Arcelor Mittal reiterated its commitment to scrap metal business and stated that the company will extensively make use of recycled resources in steelmaking process at Montreal works. According to estimates, Arcelor Mittal recycles approximately 850,000 tons of scrap steel every year.

As part of the restructuring operations, the company has decided to cease operations at the Ottawa and La Prairie recycling and processing centres. Arcelor Mittal is reported to have reached an agreement with American Iron & Metal Company Inc with regards to sale of Ottawa assets. The La Prairie is expected to shut down permanently by mid-June this year. The company management thanked the Ottawa and La Prairie employees for their dedicated work over the years.

ArcelorMittal Montreal is part of ArcelorMittal, the world's leading integrated steel and mining company.
