Americas' crude steel output records exceptional jump in March '17

SPOKANE (Scrap Monster): According to the recent data published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by South American countries increased considerably during the month of March this year. The total monthly output rose by 13.7% to total 3.654 Million tonnes (Mt). Meantime, the North American crude steel output too surged higher by over 9% during the month.

The total crude steel production by Argentina during March was 392,000 tonnes, significantly higher by 23.5% than the March 2016 production of 318,000 tonnes. Brazil produced 2.850 Million tonnes of crude steel, modestly up by 13.7% when compared to 2.506 Million tonnes production achieved during March last year. The output by Chile witnessed decline of nearly 4.4% to 100,000 tonnes in March this year. Also, total crude steel production by Colombia increased by 4.7% to 120,000 tonnes in March this year.

Ecuador’s crude steel output rebounded significantly by nearly 10% on year-on-year basis. The crude steel output by Ecuador was 55,000 tonnes in March this year, higher when compared with 50,000 tonnes during March last year.  Paraguay’s crude steel output tumbled by over 44% from 4,000 tonnes to 2,000 tonnes over the previous year.

The crude steel output by Peru was up slightly by 5.2% year-on-year. The crude steel output of Uruguay dropped significantly by nearly 32% when compared with the year before levels. On the other hand, Venezuelan production skyrocketed by nearly 148% year-on-year from 10,000 tonnes to 25,000 tonnes.

The following table provides cumulative crude steel output by the South American region for the initial three-month period of year 2017 in comparison with the corresponding three-months from January to March in 2016.

Meantime, the crude steel production by North American countries surged higher by 9.2% during the month of March year-on-year. The production totaled 10.163 Mt in March this year as against 9.305 Mt recorded in March ‘16.

The total crude steel production by Canada during March this year was 1.275 million tonnes, recording 13.7% jump in production in comparison with the March 2016 production. The US produced 7.003 Million tonnes of crude steel, slightly higher by 3.4% when compared to 6.770 Million tonnes production achieved during March last year. The total crude steel production by Mexico edged higher significantly by 35.7% from 1.349 Mt in March ‘16 to 1.830 Mt in March this year.

The Cuban crude steel production declined sharply by over 29% year-on-year to 20,000 tonnes. The crude steel output by El Salvador was estimated at 10,000 tonnes in March this year, slightly higher when compared with March last year. Guatemala produced 25,000 tonnes in March, lower by 12% when matched with the production of 28,000 tonnes during the same month a year before. The crude steel output by Trinidad & Tobago continued to remain at ‘zero’ level.

The following table provides the region’s cumulative crude steel output for the first three months of 2017 in comparison with those during the same period in 2016.
