ALBA Group to Build State-Of-The-Art Recycling Plant in Germany

SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The German recycling and raw materials major Alba Group has announced that it will invest nearly $70 million in building a new recycling plant in western Germany. The new state-of-the-art production plant for recyclable materials will be built at the Marl Chemical Park in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The plant will be built in a four-shift system, beginning autumn this year. The commissioning of the modern recycling plant is scheduled to take place in early 2019.

The new plant will be built on a land area of approximately 55,000 square meters and will combine the latest digital sorting technology with ALBA’s long years of experience. It will serve roughly 6.4 million Germans by processing lightweight packaging scrap. The processing capacity of the plant is estimated at around 200,000 metric tons per year. The plant will produce and supply high purity raw materials such as secondary plastic resins which can be used as a substitute for primary sources.

Dr. Axel Schweitzer, CEO of ALBA Group, the new recycling plant will make the company a leader in terms of sorting technology, not only in Germany, but also across the entire Europe. The recycling facility will equip the company to achieve the high-volume requirements of the new Packaging Act in Germany. The multi-million dollar investment will help to position ALBA Group to be a dominant player in the German domestic market. Furthermore, it will contribute in a big way towards achieving raw materials efficiency in Europe. Incidentally, recycling activities by the company had resulted in prevention of 4.3 million tonnes of GHG emissions in 2016 and had led to conservation of 36.2 million tonnes of natural resources.

Dr. Jörg Harren, site manager of the Marl Chemical Park stated that the Park is proud to have attracted another internationally renowned company to its premises. The presence of ALBA Group will help to turn the park facility to a flagship location for recycling and sustainability services. Furthermore, it will attract more prominent companies to the location. The Marl Chemical Park is one of the largest chemical sites in Germany, covering a total area of more than six square kilometers.

Earlier in June this year, ALBA Group had signed an agreement with its Chinese partners to build a hi-tech recycling park southeast of the city of Deyang in Chinese Sichuan province. The company had committed investment of $1.2 billion to build the “Deyang Resource Recycling Industrial Park”.
