ALACERO: Latin American rolled steel imports surged 14% in Jan '15

BRUSSELS (Scrap Monster): The latest data published by the Latin American Steel Association (ALACERO), the region’s rolled steel products import rose 14% in January this year. At the same time, rolled production did not show any increase, while consumption registered overall growth of 1% over the year.

As per data, Latin America imported 2 million tons of rolled steel, rising significantly higher by 14% when compared with the total imports of 1.7 million tons during the same month a year ago. The rolled imports during the month represented 35% of the total regional consumption. The region’s exports dropped 6% over the previous year to total 661,000 tons, thereby resulting in a trade deficit of 1.33 million tons. The deficit surged higher by 27% in comparison with the deficit of 1.05 million tons during January last year. In Jan ’15, all countries in the region reported deficits in rolled steel trade.

The rolled steel consumption in the region was marginally up by 1% in January. The consumption totaled 5.7 million tons during the month. The consumption increased 11% year-on-year in Mexico and Peru. Chile too recorded 4% rise in rolled steel consumption. On the other hand, Venezuela saw sharp 18% decline in consumption. The consumption by Ecuador and Argentina too contracted by 17% and 9% respectively.

In Jan ’15, Latin America produced 4.5 million tons of rolled steel, similar to the production during the same month a year ago. Brazil’s production totaled 2 million tons, accounting for 45% of the region’s total production. Mexico stood second with total monthly output of 1.4 million tons. The production by Mexico and Peru increased 3% and 2% respectively. Meantime rolled steel production dropped by 27% in Venezuela.

Also, advance information of February 2015 indicates that the rolled production dropped by 5% to 4.5 million tons.
