AkzoNobel launches 100% compostable and recyclable coated paper cups

ALBANY (Scrap Monster): AkzoNobel has come up with an industry-changing innovation with the launch of coated paper cups that are fully compostable and recyclable. The coating technology-EvCote Water Barrier 3000 is made from plant-based oils and recycled PETs. The technology is expected to create significant economic and environmental impact.

According to the company, EvCote coated cups do not require any modification in the current recycling stream. Recycling of these paper cups does not diminish the quality of paper fibre. On the other hand, the paper fiber remains intact and thus could be reused to produce other paper products. Studies show that the coating strengthens the fibers and as a result, the paper produced from the waste tends to be much stronger than the original uncoated paper.

The cups are made up of 95% renewable content and are expected to benefit restaurant owners and cup producers.

The EveCote protects the paper cups from water, grease and moisture. They can also be used in several applications including corrugated packaging, folding carton board, beverage carrier board, and foodservice packaging.

AkzoNobel is a leading global paints and coatings company and a major producer of specialty chemicals. Headquartered in Amsterdam, the company has operations in more than 80 countries.
