SEATTLE (Scrap Monster): The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) has announced winners of 2016 Institute Medal- its highest technical award. The awards were presented to six industry researchers by AISI Chairman John Ferriola, chairman, chief executive officer and president of Nucor Corporation during the 124th AISI General Meeting held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The award winning paper titled “Implementation of High-Turbulence Roll Cooling at ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s Hot Strip Mill”, was authored by John J. Fitzpatrick, manager, product characterization – research and development; Ghassan Gebara, business unit manager of hot mill technology; Andrei Ianos, senior specialist, hotrolling; Zafer Koont, senior research leader -- all from ArcelorMittal Dofasco in Hamilton, Ontario—and Hugo Uijtdebroeks, activity manager, process technology, metal processing, from the Centre For Research in Metallurgy in Liege-Gent, Belgium.

Thomas J. Gibson, president and CEO of AISI congratulated the 2016 Institute Medal winners and finalists. He added that such critical R&D work has helped the steel industry to move forward as a leader in manufacturing innovation.

The Finalist medals were awarded to “Improving the Reliability of Blast Furnace Blowpipes,” authored by Charles Copeland, process engineer, Ironmaking and Stuart Street, technical manager, Ironmaking -- both at AK Steel Corporation in Dearborn, Michigan and “Impact of Argon Injection Through Tundish Upper Nozzle on Mold Fluid Flow at ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s No. 1 Continuous Caster, ” authored by Stephen Daeyoung Chung, steelmaking process improvement specialist, and Joydeep Sengupta, principal researcher, primary processes, continuous casting – both at ArcleorMittal Dofasco in Hamilton, Ontario.

Established in 1927, the Institute Medal and two Finalist Medals are awarded for technical papers having special merit and importance in connection with the activities and interests of the iron and steel industry. Papers are judged on the potential value to future prosperity of the industry, technical excellence and originality, effective communication and breadth of interest to AISI members.

AISI serves as the voice of the North American steel industry in the public policy arena and advances the case for steel in the marketplace as the preferred material of choice. AISI also plays a lead role in the development and application of new steels and steelmaking technology. AISI is comprised of 19 member companies, including integrated and electric furnace steelmakers, and approximately 125 associate members who are suppliers to or customers of the steel industry.
