Airplane trash bags to be under Customs' gold surveillance cameras

NEW DELHI (Scrap Monster): The rise in gold smuggling acts involving airplane trash bags has forced the Customs to place the garbage bags in aircrafts from Gulf countries under X-Ray scanner.

The Indian Customs authorities have decided to conduct X-ray scan on all airport trash bags. The new system will be introduced in Karipur International Airport in Southern India, which reported huge rise in gold smuggling acts recently. According to Customs officials, food trolleys also need to be scanned through X-ray machines.

Intelligence officials at the airport had seized 2 kilograms of gold abandoned in trash bag of an Air Arabia flight that arrived from Dubai. According to them, smugglers had left the gold in trash, to be retrieved later with the help of garbage clearing staff.

According to reports, smugglers, with the help of staff, retrieve the unnoticed garbage gold when they arrive at the airport’s waste treatment facility. The Airport Customs has decided to keep close watch on people handling such duties. Additionally all airport cleaning and ground handling staff will have to undergo x-ray scans while leaving the airport after duty. Earlier, body checks were performed only when they entered the airport.

However, sources say that Customs may request for additional staff to perform screening of garbage bags, owing to acute shortage of staff at the airport.
