African crude steel production falls during Jan '15

KAMPALA (Scrap Monster): According to the recent data published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by the African region declined by 3.0% during the month of January 2015 year-on-year. The output during the month totaled 1.280 Million tonnes when compared with the output of 1.320 Million tonnes in Jan ’14.

The total crude steel production by Algeria during Jan ‘15 was 35,000 tonnes, remaining flat over the year. Egypt produced 605,000 tonnes of crude steel, up by 11.60% when compared to 542,000 tonnes production achieved during January 2014. Libya’s crude steel output surged by 4.5% to 80,000 tonnes during the month of Jan ‘15. On the other hand, Morocco’s output plunged by nearly 82.7% to 10,000 tonnes, when compared to 58,000 tonnes production achieved during January 2014. South Africa’s crude steel output too dropped sharply by 9.6% from 609,000 tonnes to 550,000 tonnes year-on-year.

The crude steel production by Algeria during Dec ‘14 had totaled 35,000 tonnes, remaining flat over the year. Egypt had produced 658,000 tonnes of crude steel, up 17.0% when compared to 562,000 tonnes production achieved during December 2013. Libya’s crude steel output had surged by 26.1% to 85,000 tonnes during the month of December 2014. On the other hand, Morocco’s output had plunged by nearly 60% to 11,000 tonnes, when compared to 27,000 tonnes production achieved during December 2013. South Africa’s crude steel output was marginally up by 0.3% from 608,000 tonnes to 610,000 tonnes year-on-year.
