African crude steel output dropped 2.2% in May

The crude steel production by African region declined during the month of May this year, with Libya reporting heavy decline in output. This is in accordance with the most recent statistics released by the World Steel Association.

African crude steel output dropped 2.2% in May

KAMPALA (Scrap Monster): According to the recent data published by the World Steel Association, the crude steel production by the African region fell slightly by 2.2% during the month of May year-on-year.

The total crude steel production by Algeria during May this year was 35,000 tonnes, more or less unchanged when compared with May last year. Egypt produced 457,000 tonnes of crude steel, slightly lower by 0.7% when compared to 460,000 tonnes production achieved during May 2014. Libya’s crude steel output dropped sharply by 40.4% to 49,000 tonnes during the month of May this year. Morocco’s output recovered sharply by 23.8% to 52,000 tonnes, when compared to 42,000 tonnes production achieved during May 2014. South Africa’s crude steel output held steady at 550,000 tonnes during the month.

When compared with the previous month, Algerian crude steel output remained flat. Egypt’s output has dropped when compared with 590,000 tonnes during April this year. Libyan crude steel output in May ‘15 increased marginally by 2,000 tonnes over the previous month. Morocco’s production jumped five-fold during the month. South African production increased by 20,000 tonnes when matched with the previous month.
